Benchmarking
"Benchmarking evaluation is the process of comparing one's business processes and performance metrics to field bests and best practices from other steak holders within the same field." Urs Hauenstein (2012)
The following questions are important:
- Why ae others better?
- How are others better?
- What can we learn from others?
- How can we catch up their secrets?
- How can we become one of the best in our field?
Our benchmarking method is a ongoing activity of systematic measuring of the processes and achievements against acknowledged results of leading key and core competitors to facilitate improved performance.
We are following these mailstones on our highway of benchmarking: Measuring - Analysis - Action
- What to benchmark, select subject, define the process, identify potential partners and data sources, plan benchmarking
- Understand current performance, agree best practice
- Assess best practice, study others, collect data, select partners
- Analysis, data comparison, learn from data, gaps, establish process performance, communicate, adjust goal, implement and disseminate
- Make an action plan and use findings, repeat, benchmarks to an ongoing benchmarking process, review and recalibrate
We are working with different benchmarking procedures:
- Internal vs external benchmarking
- and three different main types of benchmarking: Process, performance and strategic benchmarking
